Now that CDMA has been canned, is the G3 network better on the Cape?
What's reception like in Weipa?
Does the G3 range extend further than the CDMA did?
Or has this been answered in another thread and I've just missed it?

Took a new Next g last year , worked until lakeland and that was it.We camped at Virilya and CDMA had service. Hopefully better now.I know Sam at Weipa RACQ had to go back to CDMA for service.

Lakeland does have reception, but it is patchy either side for a while. Mt Molloy works fine. Cooktown also works and so does Hopevale towards Elim Beach.
Who knows what the rest of the cape does.

I'm heading up to Weipa in two weeks with a new ZTE165 Telstra 'Country Phone' that apparently has the best reception up that way (depending on who you listen to).
Will report back on the reception in the Weipa area - after I do some major exploring!
CAN'T WAIT!!! :D

Page 165 of this years Cape Yorker Mag there is a Telephone coverage section in "Travelling to the Tip"
Hand Held Telstra Next G standard handset: Lakeland, Laura Kowanyama, Pormpuraaw, Coen, Aurukun, Cooktown, Hopevale, Weipa, Lockart river, Bamaga, and Wujal Wujal, Telstra Next G Bluetick is pretty much the same.

Last year we drove from Lockhart to the top via the Telegraph track. My friend had NEXT G and i had CDMA. Although there were a lot of places with no coverage, we found CDMA had a better coverage then NEXT G.
I don't know if NEXT G has improved since then.

At least there is reception in the towns, so we can give a message home.

My understanding was Next G and CDMA shared similar equipment in the exchanges and the CDMA interfered with the Next G signal.
They expected Next G to improve once CDMA was removed.

Hi again,
I have bought my next G (with regional tick - LG TU550) with us and i am using it as a modem for my computer to keep our families updated about our trip via our website. i have had reception up to Cooktown, then at Coen, Bamaga, Punsand Bay and now we are back in Weipa. At each of those stops it has been used as a phone and internet service.
Has been wonderful to keep a journal and upload photos for family and friends seeing that we are away for 6 weeks (and we have a 2 and 3 year old whose Nannies and Poppies are missing them very much).
Hope this helps.

Hi angejas,
Thanks for the update, useful to know that phones will work in some areas.
How's the trip been going?, obviously you'd all be enjoying yourselves.
When you get back you'll have to post a thread "handy hints and tips when travelling with littlies" or something.
