Highlift,
Just an update on the never ending extension of "Black Top" in the Cape.
The biggest project currently is a 38km strip from Crocodile Gap to Lily Creek Rd, $21.4 million to be completed by May 2009.
This should just about provide a tarred road from Lakeland to Laura, except for the area around the river. They were doing some test drilling at the river on the eastern side of Laura, so maybe plans are afoot there also??
There are also a few new areas since my 2006 trip, around Musgrave and Archer River, which continue to break up the monotony of the dirt roads.
Overall, the unsurfaced roads seem to be in great shape, except for the northern part of the Heathlands bypass road. Bone shattering corrugations, big sand drifts and bulldust holes. But, that's the cape for you. Helps keep the family sedans out of there for a few more years yet !! Mind you, it didn't stop a standard 48 (?) seater bus do a trip from Cairns to the Jardine Ferry to pick up a group of indigenous kids, and back to Cairns in a 1 and a half day trip !

Scorcher, When I went back through the Batavia road I got talking to one of the grader drivers and they were finishing up at Batavia and heading up to Heathlands. They are probably there at the moment.

Ant,
We left the Tip a day after you (from memory). They had started work on the section from the Captain Billy's turn-off, south towards Bramwell.
It's amazing how quickly some areas change. A couple of days of a grader & roller, and it's like a highway, but a few weeks of traffic, quickly result in corrugations & bulldust ruts returning.
Much better than seeing Tar Seal all the way to the Tip, though.
