Hi guys and gals .. its getting close now! like many others in 10 12 week were off .
Thought i might share with you our pre trip planing and prep of the vehicles
3 of us are heading up paul and jeff" ants brothers and my self dave!

I plan on riding the full distance up and back. we will allso have a second bike that the boys will share both regested .
The plan is cairns, cooktown ,lakefield N/P ,weipa, then up the OTL with a few detours to the top, fish and exploring for 3-4 weeks
packing light bikes ,fuel , swags, food ,fish rods +gear .

we need a 4x4 ute?? paul finds a 1500 doller hilux talked him down lol"
Then set jeff lose on it ,replacing everything thats worn out or looks unservicable!

Preparing a $1000 doller 88 hilux 2.2 petrol for the cape !
Sofar.. he has replaced a hole list of things including uni joints, senter bearing all brakes, wheel bearings
cut rust out around windscreen ,new screen ,
new 33 mud tyers
seviced the hole drive line oils filtes ect,.
and it goes on more to come! winch +diff lock ?

Good points: i dont have to travel in the dame thing !
Its a toyota has a snorkel and elec ignition ? mabe thats a bad point ,scrub bars.:-? "LoL"
You can build a capeyork beast for 5-6k This way you dont chance drowning a 35k work vehicle ,then you can realy get in amongest it up the cape !into some of the more remote spots !

Nice work Dave,
I am sure it makes most of us feel like we are part of it all. Good to see the work in progress.
That KTM looks the goods. Are you going to be riding the sealed roads with a different tyre? Those tyres on the bike may wear pretty quick on the bitumen, particularly if you are driving the whole way from the Sunny Coast.

Tell Jeff to get a haircut and a real job!!

dave
19-04-2008, 09:54 AM
I will bring the bikes up on my ute ant, then unload them in cairns
leve my ute there somewere,i am not that keen .:) hehe..
i hope there is not too much bitumen  allthough i understand that from what i have read alot of the development road is sealed , will try and stay off it as much as we can. the ktm eats rear tyres up big time."loL:
picking the correct tyre compound will help on the hard packed ground.

cheers ,,will do!

Dave, don't worry about the development road ... stuff all of it is sealed. From Laura on she's pretty much dirt except for about 20kms around coen and a few 5km stretches here and there.

If you're coming up the inland road past Mt Carbine and Lakeland, I suggest you just take the ute to Lakeland and ride the bike from there.

If you're going via Daintree etc, then you may as well leave the ute in Cairns or Mossman.

Bike looks good ... probably not much change out of 20grand with all the bells and whistles, hey?

Hope you enjoy yourself, should be a blast.

dave
19-04-2008, 04:07 PM
yeah thanks batesy ! for the info...hum?
about 17-18k with arai hellmet/boots and extras on road i havent added it up

I would like to go over the creb track so yeah unload in cairns.

cheers... more up dates on the ute soon !

highlift80
09-05-2008, 10:38 PM
I maybe on again now for a trip up in August this year will see how we go in the next few months the daughter was going on an NT camp for 3 weeks end of july and some of august which helped stump our plans for a trip this year but I found out today the camp has now been cancelled so I have got an extra $1600 in my pocket now, will be able to add that to the fuel kitty the ol camp trailer is in bits at the moment and I have gear spread all around the place so will have to do some serious work, might have to look at doing some O.T at work as well.

dave
19-05-2008, 09:06 PM
hi guys/girls ,shrek i will be going up late august for sure !

I can do it now with out back up 4x4 , i have been thinking long and hard about taking the ktm up the cape !and i have a new plan and new bike

The ktm 530exc is just not suited for outback adventure riding but oh what a bike it is in single track enduro work so in the shed it stays:rolleyes:

I decided i needed two bikes for too diffrent riding types enduro riding in the local forestry on weekends the ktm, and a full on adventure bike for outback long distant riding that can carry all the gear and lots of fuel.
Well you can,t go past the suzuki dr650es there cheap and all the adventure add ons are available,

So i purchased a S/H low k one this week 06 dr650 suzuki with 4500klm on the clock , near new,$5600 with rego like new condishion!

I have lots of work a head of me will be fitting it out in the next few weeks with 30lt tank ,rear rack, panniers, bash plate ,tyers, gps ect ect i will up date photos as i transfer it from a stock dr650 to full out back adventure desert/capyork bike.

The dr is bullet proof . as far as reliability goes and is low maintenance ,up to 3000ks bettween oil swaps if you choose!
The engine allso comes standed with a huge oil cooler:rolleyes:

LOOKING FORWORD TO THIS TRIP FOR A LONG TIME NOW! and i ant walking

CHEERS UP DATE SOON ! DAVE

Dave- You are one serious, mad keen, crazy dude. For someone to realise that they need an upgrade and to then just go out and do it is something else. You are certainly dedicated to the bikes and deadly serious about this trip!

Something to also seriously consider-safety and first aid. What have you got in the way of protective clothing and first aid supplies. For example, people I have seen riding the dirt up here have a 'full face covering' as that dust will get in EVERYWHERE. I would also carry an EPIRB on me just in case things go 'pear-shaped', plus a pretty good first aid kit to cover all your bases.
Maybe you have already thought of all of this!!

Keen to see the new bike as it is and to see how it progresses with the changes.

How is Jeff's bike going?

dave
19-05-2008, 09:42 PM
yes yes all noted ant the dust humm ! i thought a full face helmet would let to much dust up and in your face , so a moto cross helmet with goggels and tear offs would be the go and bandana over mouth
first ad kit / 5w handheld uhf /maping gps, and paper maps!
3 lt hydration pak + extra water bottel holders and extra 5-10lt fuel containers are just some of the gear i will take.

sill have the valves on back order from the states for jeffs bike
i emailed them to day for a update on delivery,

cheers ! photos soon

This weekend i test road the dr650 at jeffs farm north of bundy ,
I nocked off early friday then drove to maryborough to pick the dr up
I did the deal then loaded the bike on the ute and headed straight off too baffel creek.

Well my first ride saterday morning was intresting too say the least !
down to the local shop was a nice morning ride , i waited till
9am just incase of roos!!!!!!!,

The bike is so smooth on the road or dirt/road even with standed 4500k tyers it suprised me how well it stuck to the gravel road , on the open country
100k road that winds its way down to the shop, was very stable and comfortably cruzzed on 110klm with out the engine reving it head off..and the seat is not like a plank of wood.

Heading back from the shop i felt that i had made the right decision with this bike and its so smooth and comfy too ride.
I turn in to the gravel road that leads up to the farm and wind the throttle on a little bit 80-100ks over a crest and i see a 4 foot roo jump out from the left, about 50meters in front ,instantly i back off . but its too late a 5-6 foot big male gray jumps out from the wattle trees bordering the road.. straight into my left fork leg / front gaurd tweeking the bars i hung on like all sh#t!!! and kepted it upright!!
,it then barrel roll down on to the front tyre and i dozed it down the road for 10meters before running it over . i looked back too see it hop up and hop away .. wow ' my first test ride on my new adventure bike before i modify it for long distance trave turns out to be a real eye opener,:)
anyway here she is
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e374/dave720gtr/bikepices014chopped.jpg
and this is the damaged from the roo , gaurd got a little melted on the tyre
front brake line eyelet and reflecter twisted,.
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e374/dave720gtr/bikepices019chopped.jpg
I think i got off very lightly considering the size of it..

List of mods needed for cape york/ adventure riding.

Dave,
Glad to see you survived the roo incident relatively unscathed, it obviously could just as easily ended in disaster.
Is there something on the market like shoo-roo that can be fitted to the bike?
Looks like a very nice ride, will be interested to read your trip report on your return.

That rack looks like it was designed to fit the base of one thing ... a carton of beer. :)

Tell me I'm wrong!

By the way, that DR looks very clean. Did it actually ever get ridden off-road by the prvious owner. Can't even see any scuff marks.

har you crack me up batesy ! hehe yeah only ever riden on road , it is/was spotless no scuff marks or scrachers ..the racks and pannier brackets are still coming along up date soon ,
The big safari tank turned up today and with all the heavy rain the boss said stay in bed so this gave me some time to play!
fitting the tank was ease as !! everything needed was supply .

The big pig left and sexy wepon right
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e374/dave720gtr/bikepices043.jpg

I busted out the wallet today and purchased heavy duty truck canvas adventure pannies $295au
+ andy pigback straps,$33.00au made in aussie ,,
allso picked up some small wolfman tank pannies of epay,$65us
jd jet kit stage 1 and 2 jets +mixter screw $65au off epay

modifed the air box and removed muffler resrictor
waiting on jets before i ride as factory jetting is way to lean.
All so drill too extra holes in the carbi slide this with the jetts and pipe will liven it right up !fuel economy will drop slightly ,engine throttle response and power increase will outway the little exrtra fuel usage.all comes back to how aggresive you ride .

i have a up date on jeffs xr630 the engine is coming together !
the head is finshed new black diamond SS valves turned up after being on back order for 4 weeks this has cost time which were runing out of 8 weeks till mid augest ,not much time for testing her out ! both bikes!

for me this trip will be a test ! for the dr and my self , i am setting the dr up so i cant travel the gulf/ simson / birdsvill track/ flinders/red senter ect"as well , with no back up4x4 this first trip up the cape is to test all the gear out ! so paul / jeff will be there if i have any worries ill tag along with them for the most! some things like extra fuel /water and so forth the lux can carrie but i will be carring the most part of all the things i would need on a out back adventure ride !

i wish i could leve now :(

dave

hi every1 just wondering what type of tyres do you think is best to put an the 4x4 for the trip to the cape .ATR or mud terrains and also whats the best brand around for this trip, i have to get a set and every tells me diffrent stories

ant
15-06-2008, 07:07 PM
Tyres are a personal preference. For my opinion, I now use an ATR and the brand I use are not as well known as some of the heavier marketed brands. I have done five trips into the Cape with these tyres so far and they have been fantastic with both wear and durability. Just got back from a trip to the tip and back and not a single problem with them.

Tyre pressures are a BIG factor in tyre wear/failure and probably play a bigger part than the actual brands themselves.

moo-moo
15-06-2008, 07:11 PM
hi ant what pressures do you reckon on corrigated rds is best more or less.
also are you in cairns tomorrow ill grab your mag .i havent seen it yet and im excited

ant
15-06-2008, 07:28 PM
Moo Moo- tyre pressures are not that easy. It all depends on the load you are carrying and how your vehicle is set up. As I said, it is a personal choice and I know many others who do things a lot differently that I do. I got all my advice from Ross at Cairns Tyre Specialists and, to me he, is the guy to speak to.
I ran 37psi in my tryres for the last trip regardless of where I was, and I drove on everything from sand to bitumen. The suspension should take the shock- not the tyres- the tyres are not 'shock absorbers'

As for the mag- I am in Cairns tomorrow- give me a yell and I will get a copy to you: 0429 701 323

hi guys things are all coming together i am ready to leve ! my bikes ready all my caming gear cooking ect is just about complete, its cost me lots of dollers to set up but the way i see it is i can take time of work anytime and ride any were in australia including the cape as often as i can,
jeff and me have been working night and day on the xr630 photos tomoro night ! engine back in and bike is 80% complete ,the rear shock is in for service and will be 2weeks as shock guy is flat out,i email usa for a full exhaust we should have it landed in 2 weeks we still have 4-5 weeks up how sleves pauls still keen to come but is looking forward to thrashing jeffs bike "lol"
thats good beacuse jeff will only have a 200k fuel range with extra5L mine will do 600klm with extra 5L jerry.so i will syphon some out for him.

Allso if you think were cuttinng it a bit short jeff booked in to Qride at 4pm today for his open bike license. the rules change 12 am tonight, and he would of had to of waited 12 months to ride a big cc bike as he only as ever had a lerners 250cc the goose hehe lucky boy!
so its still a green light for jeffs bike and he should have a weeks testing before we leve after its regoed on road ,

I'd be chucking some serious knobby's on her and maybe allow a bit more air space between the front mudguard and tyre.

Looks nice and comfortable, plenty of power, reasonably light considering the size of it, at least it is before you load it up with beer, rods, beer, lures, beer and a lot of clean undies.

What do they sell for? Just want to know so i can ground myself and stop dreaming.

plenty of undies :p "lol" harhar stacky spot on . this bike the 950 adventure
has been up dated in late 2006 and till now 2008 with 990cc and F.I fuel injection.retail on the new mode is $21,000 plus on road costs .out of my price range .but you can pick up a second hand 950 adventure carbi 2003-2005 around 12,000-14,000 with low ks like 10.000ks and thay go just as well as the 990 just ease to work on with carbis , the frist after market part i will be fitting is a steering dampner .for the bull dust and sand traps out west ,

STACKY dont test ride one .or you will want one harhar!!!!!!
crazzy fast and very smooth 6 speed .over 200ks in 5th there geared for
uro and need gearing back to make 6th gear useable ,

Every time i hear some bikes come thumping into town i start thinking of how bad i want one.

You know what they say.........Once you throw a leg over a bike you'll never go without one.

Unfortunately i haven't had one for almost 2 years and there's not a day that goes past where i don't think about it.

I just don't want to sacrifice my boats to get one, that's the ultimatum i've been given from my financial adviser (thump) OW!.... I mean beautiful Wife.
