Hi all we havent done the cape before as most years we go to the Kimberleys to escape cold old Adelaide. What I am after is a idea of must see and do up there we will be heading up early June late May in the trusty Troopie towing a camper trailer. Our main interests are just seeing this great land with a bit of photography and some fishing. So if you can help a couple of Cape Virgins it would be greatly appreciated. BTW we have up to 2 months to spend on the cape itself cheers Woozle

hi Woozle,
Welcome aboard. I think you will find all the info you need (and maybe a little bit more) here on the forum. Two months is a nice time frame to spend on the cape for the first time. I would say that you are in for a top time, particularly if your agenda is centered around taking it easy and fishing!.
There is so much info on the cape that you may need to be a little more specific with your requests. For example, how is your camper set up, what sort of fishing are you really looking at doing, are there certain areas that interest you more than others, etc...........

Cheers Ant the CT is a Spirit off road soft floor with a tinny on the top also we have a roof top tent in case we have to leave the trailer to get into some difficult spots. The troopy is a 2001 model and has a 2 inch lift with a 1HZ and a AXT turbo with MTZ round black things and has proven to be very capable over the years it also has heaps of other stuff like full bar work ,twin wheel carrier,hf radio, outback drawers, cargo barrier, uhf etc,etc etc. There will be 2 vehicles going my mates is a similar one to mine but a 79 series. my main objective is to get some realy speccy landscape photos and to just see more of what this beautifull land has to offer. My mates priority is to catch a barra he is a virgin in that and when we go away together he is the only one who comes back empty handed it's frustating the heck out of him but gives us endless hours of stiring material. All up we are very flexable and just want to have a good time and come back with some good memories and a want to go back there after all isn't that what it's all about

Welcome Woozle,
I hope you get all the right info before you head off, and I really cant wait till you get back with all your photos and stories. Sorry to wish your life away on you......:D
Sounds like a great 2 months planned indeed.
cheers

HI Woozle,
Sounds like you have all the right ingredients for a top time in the cape. Let us know if you need any specific info on anything up this way.
Who knows, I may even be able to put your mate onto a barra. I don't often give out hot spots but reading your post about his bad luck has nearly brought a tear to my eye. Jeez, I may even drive up there and take him fishing myself!

Hi Woozle,
I think the Ron Moon Book covers most the main attractions for your must see places and adventure. Maybe you could get the last couple of Capeyorker magazines for a bit more inside info or heads up (No worries Ant, i'll have a couple of RMG Scorpions). Two months is a good amount of time to really soak up all the destinations where you will set up camp. It sounds as though you are a seasoned traveller and well fitted out with your gear to handle any tricky bits.
If you take your time and look around a bit you will find just about anywhere you look over your shoulder there will be another great photo to be taken all over Cape York.
You shouldn't have any trouble catching a Barra with your mate as you have a boat and time to explore. Just remember QLD has legal size limits for these fish unlike the Territory (I think). The East coast Barra have to be over 58cm and under 120cm, The west coast Barra have to be over 60cm and under 120cm. The metre plus Barra are mostly caught on the west coast and definetly no where near my boat in the far north east coast......yet.
Hi Stacky,
Get your local mates to take you up to Temple Bay sometime. They used to often go hunting for Turtle etc. up there. We used to catch Barra over a meter long in a bait net (when we were casting for bait), at our creek mouth.
They gave me a lovely Turtle shell one day. They'd come ashore and have a feast while they were up there sometimes.
Caught a huge Turrum just south of the Olive one day Trolling. Thought at first it was a Turtle. Can't remember the weight, but I had a hell of a time keeping it on the bench to fillet it. Biggest fish I've ever seen. We'd been visiting Hugo, and weren't really seriously fishing, but my ex. thought he'd Troll for a bit and see what happened. Took him by surprise, and he had a hell of a time getting it in the tinny.
God I miss those days,
xina.

All these destinations to check out are endless.
I will get to Temple bay, just not yet. I want to fish the creeks where not many white fella's have set foot yet and i think south and inland of 'Old Site' is first up.
Plans can change in an instant though and if there's an opportunity to head up to Temple Bay i will snatch it up.
Xina,
Talk of catching Barra over a metre in a cast net might have me up there a little sooner though.............maybe this New Moon long weekend coming.
