View Full Version : What do you like about the Cape Yorker Magazine?
Well, the 2008 edition is on its way to completion and while I sit here trying to wind down after another hectic day, the thought occurred to me to ask what it is about the mag that people like. The new mag is going to be a little different with the content now that Batesy is no longer with us (he is busy selling domain names now and making more money than me too may I add!).
To give a brief rundown, we have a lot of great pics (which I think really makes it shine), heaps of info particularly on the area of Laura (this place is under-rated), more 4wd how-to stuff thanks to the team at TJM, a few personality profiles (Toots, Dave Donald, and Brazakka to name a few), fishing tips, photography spreads of Kowanyama, Lockhart and the Laura dance festival. Plus a heap of other stuff as well and all squashed into 180 pages. Did I also mention that our Subscription prize section is starting to burst at the seams with businesses such as Engel and Gladiator tackle on board and rumours of TJM and others joining in too!!
But, what is it about the magazine that you like, or more to the point, what do you want to see more of in the magazine??
Fishing?
Four wheel driving?
Locations?
People of the Cape?
Destinations?
Maps?
History?
Humor?
Photography?
......................?
Let me know so that I can do my best from this end to make it all happen for next year.

Sounds good to me so far. Better put my order in.
At this point, just more of everything Ant. Let you know if I think of anything else.

Ant,
From what I've already seen, in particular the 2007 edition, and your description of this years, I think you have the right "recipe".
I think that is what makes it unique - a bit of this, a bit of that. It covers all the things that keep luring us back there.
If I want to read only about fishing, I get the NAFA Annual.
If I want to read about 4x4 locations, I grab one of the 4x4 mags.
If I want to read about everything The Cape has to offer, I get The CapeYorker Mag !!!!
Don't forget to give us the heads up when it's about to be sent out, so I can set up camp next to the letterbox !!

Thanks for the feedback,
Things like this help to keep me going. Don't just mention the good side of things though. If this magazine is going to keep improving, I need to know what else to add to it as well. I reckon that the Cape Yorker is at a good stage right now but still has a hell of a lot of growth over the next few years. Watch this space!!!!
Scorcher, your reply is the ideal advertising pitch- may have to use it in the next media kit. Do I have your stamp of approval??
What sort of camp are you going to set up at the letter box? Better bring the Engel and a camp oven.

A couple of quick thoughts Ant,
Maybe some specific interest stories such as the pig culling along the western beaches, and specific projects such as the cleaning up of the beaches to remove the old nets etc in some of the communities.
Maybe also a feature on individual aboriginal communities and some of the must see things to do when you visit.

Ant - Go for it!
I'm not sure what the neighbours would think of me, my 80 series, and the Kimberley Kamper set up at the top of the drive??
btw - The KK has a spare spot to fit one of the CapeYorker stickers across the back (hint hint). Pay's to advertise ;)

Excellent ideas.
I have approached both the feral pig culling and also the cleaning of beaches and the turtle conservation side of things. Unfortunately, as these are all tied to some form of Governmental funding and media 'restrictions', it is almost easier to pull teeth. The points you have mentioned are what I want to cover in future editions and lets just hope that the governing departments can see the benefits of publishing this sort of info in the future.

Nice work!
Send me your address via PM and I will see what I can do. Keep in mind that my main focus is the 2008 edition of the next mag so other things may take a little longer.

Or are you only supplying Santa Clause for his Christmas delivery round?!!
By the way I'm thinking of buying: www.LessTalk-MorePublishing.com ... maybe I can sell it to you Ant? :)

Ive got my sticker in the shed, Im not putting it on until I get to go.Might have a Toyota by then and dont want to waste it.The way fuel is at the moment Ant you might have to change it to CAPE WALKER. or CAPE TALKER.
Batesy,
Nice to be sitting on the other side of the fence eh!
Campdog: Fuel prices are here and there isn't much we can do about it. I guess the extra we spend on fuel can be written off against the alcohol we can't take into certain areas, or fishing tackle we don't need.........

If I didnt know better, I could assume you two are recently divorced
:D :D
I am yet to read a copy Ant, so when they hit the stands I will be looking for it, or maybe better to subscribe?
cheers
Les
Les,
Subscription is the best way as you are guaranteed to get a copy direct to your door. Some newsagencies will not get the mags as Gordon and Gotch have their preferred list of agencies.

Thats exactly right ant,if I was allowed a Cape trip this year it would be the same formula. 8000km with trailer at worst case 20L per 100 ks = 1600 litres at worst case 2 bucks a litre = 3200 for fuel.(covers oil etc).
So I would then work out grog and fishing tackle. 3 weeks x 10 cartons of ?(mineral water).

Ant,
While I've got your attention, a question I've been wanting to ask for a while.
What was the big catalyst resulting in 339 users on line at the one time last year???

Funny you should ask as I was only thinking the same thing earlier today. What is it they say about 'great minds think alike' or was it 'fools never differ'.
To tell you the truth, I do not know what it was that brought 339 users together at the one time. I think it had something to do with a live link to Campdogs place for the bikini show.
As for the magazine release. I wish you all knew exactly what was involved here. This thing is seriously doing my head in. Editing, photoshop, layout, print deadlines, distribution.......
If it is not out by May this year, then there will be no mag-final! I can not put any more time into it. If I didn't love the Cape (and this forum) then I would have dropped it when Batesy did- smart bugger!!!!

Ant,
I could only imagine how much work there is to do on such a publication. Let alone the other projects that you are involved in.
I have enough problems knocking up Power Point presentations and the odd brochure for a few projects that I am working on.
I'd suggest Legal Action against Batesy, and make him serve community service as your slave to finish the project off. He has lots to answer for !!!!

G'Day Ant............How does one answer that!
I might just say that I'm in the marine industry.............a dozen or so marine mags a month land on my desk......I read (flip through) them all, and pass them on to others. Only one mag has been on my desk for the last 4 months..........Cape Yorker! (Sorry, only bought it Christmas from Charleville....just before the floods).
It's diverse....it's real.......no advertorials (well not blatant).....a good read.....it's informative.......it's interesting..............it's captivating. It's...........................well done!

Scorcher and Ant,
From what i've seen, the Aboriginal Community where i reside are very negative towards the media. Mostly because every time someone comes in to write a story and take photographs, the subject is focused on something negative and make the people and place look terrible (NT. for eg.).
Something positive published out of these Communities would be a great thing and with the right approach I am sure the Leaders of the Communities would welcome it.
BUT that means bringing tourists in and probably more boats on the water. I like being the only fisho at the boat ramp even when the weather is perfect.
