View Full Version : Where are the women?
It has come to my attention that the majority of registered forum members are male (I think the only regular female is xina). While I do not have a real problem with this, it makes me wonder why we don't have more women posting and using the forum. Are they visiting as guests and not posting?
What I would like to do is for each and every one of you to ask your partners, girlfriends, aunties, sisters, mothers, grandmothers, etc what we need to do to accommodate them on the forum as well.
I have already taken the liberty of asking my wife and she tells me that a pic of CampDog in a two-piece is all she would need to see and then she would start using the forum, so come on CampDog, be a player and start posting!
Do your partners participate in the forum with you and do you also post on their behalf?
Are some of you worried that you don't want your partner to be involved in this forum?
Are you worried that their sledging will seriously burn you and not just leave you with a 'warm and fuzzy' feeling as CampDogs do?
Sorry CampDog-you are an easy target-and you like Nissans.
In all seriousness, once we get some feedback, I am willing to put up some new headings/threads so that we can get more women involved.
Maybe we need an on-line dating service link??
NO CAMPDOG, NO.

My wife said she is over Cape York and doesnt interest her. Probably because i live and dream about living there. The only time she shows interest is when I mention a boys only camping trip.
Ant how can you have a wife and get so much fishing and camping on the Cape. Not Fair.
Campdog: to answer your last question, it is not all 'beer and skittles' mate. I usually have to organise trips way in advance. I guess the only few good points I have is that visiting the cape is considered my 'work' (magazines) and I also live just down the road as well so I am not tied up with too much travel.
Now where is that pic of the two-piece??
Good on you Ant. By the way, my name is spelled with a small "x" as there is someone who preceded me, who spells hers with a capital.
I too would love to see the Bikini shot. The guys on the sledgeing thread crack me up sometimes.
Maybe the girls could swap recipes, (it's amazing how often you have to find a substitute for something) first aid tips, even talk about what not to take on the trip, what keeps the kids occupied if they're not already playing Steve Irwin or Croc. Dundee, or just what they do or don't find interesting about the country the're in at the time. (The girls that is ).
( Add Badges to the list Ant, if you haven't already got them down, and I suppose you've already thought if kids' Tees etc? )
Tips for ladies who have never been in the real Tropics re. makeup might help too. Has anyone found a better Waterproof Mascara than the Revlon one you could buy 20 odd years ago for example? You can't use normal make-up up there, if you don't want to go without it.
xina.
Hi again Ant,
Forgot to say earlier that you'll find a lot if it in Glenville Pikes' books. The Library would probably have all of them.
xina.
Hey xina,
Thanks for the post. I have edited my post now to reflect the correct spelling of your name too- sorry. You would think that I would know better, having a background as a school teacher. Hmmmmm.
You have some good ideas.
Lets see what else happens over the next few days/weeks with other people posting their ideas.
I see Camdog has left us- maybe he is organising the photo shoot as we type away. I hope he has some sort of 'floral' number or better still a 'fluoro' cozie.
Hi Ant,
Just Bright Red will do me.

Ant, dont forget girls drive toyotas..
Girls drive Toyota's because they are very reliable. The fact that girls drive Toyota's is even more reason to welcome them on the forum- you would have to agree with me there wouldn't you????

Yep> have to agree< girls love toyotas
We sure do. The last time I drove one up to Wattle Hill, I had a Wood Stove in the back. Thought it was going to go through the tray going over the corrogations on The Frenchmans' Track, but it got there in one piece. The only trouble I had, was because I didn't know how snorkels worked at that time. The Tojo had been sent up from the Sunshine Coast for me , and I collected it in Mirriwinni. I got my brother-in-law to check it out for me, and also a mechanic at the Garage, before I left to go north. I asked every male who looked under the hood, if the hose was in the right place, and was told it was.
I drowned it in Hann Creek, almost home. Luckily, another shareholder lived very close, so I managed to get it towed out before too much damage was done. When I drove it out of Wattle hill going south again, it was still running beautifully.
I've just bought a High-ace Campervan, so I'm still driving Toyotas.
Ant, I don't think the Scan worked.
I'm still waiting to see the Red Bikini.
xina.
Ant,
If the girls aren't exactly enamored of The Cape, maybe that's because they only know about the Fishing, the Four-wheel driving macho stuff, and for some, there'll be too much booze.
It's a shame they've never been able to walk along a beach finding beautiful shells. There is usually all sorts of stuff that's been washed ashore off Yachts and Fishing Trawlers. The Kids would have a ball. You can find anything from Fruit and Veges,(usually Apples, Oranges, and sometimes Bananas, and Potatoes&Carrots.) to 2in1 Shampoo and Conditioner. Tupperware, (yes it's everywhere) Thongs,(no pairs 'though) Plastic knives and forks, toothbrushes, combs, Hong Kong Jewellery valuations in little Silk purses,Furniture,(some very good) Lots of plastic crates off the trawlers,Way too much fishing net, and plastic bags, toys, surfboards, Plastic bouys. You never know what you're going to find. Not to mention possible old bits of shipwreck.
If you keep your eyes open as you walk, you'll probably come across aboriginal artifacts somewhere along the way. Just remember you have to leave them where they are. Even better probably, you should see some native Orchids, if you look hard enough. Don't forget there are a lot of terrestrial Orchids in this country. The day I left Temple Bay, just as I was getting into the Tinney, I found a Dutch Clay pipe. Gave it to someone in Portland Roads, and never did get a date for it.
Another time I found what I think is a Spanish axe . The original handle had been probably eaten by termites, so a handle of Australian Hardwood had been fixed to it. I had to leave that one behind, but I still want to retrieve it someday.
Went for a walk on Wattle Hill one day, and found a hill that was covered with Orchids. Had to watch where I put my feet, so I wouldn't walk on them. It's amazing country, and if you keep your eyes open, it can be a wonderland. So keep an open mind ladies, and you just might start looking forward to the trips to Cape York. Forgive me, but I'm Biased. I LOVE the place.
xina.
PS forgot to mention Vases and Ornaments.(China)>
xina- Wow!
You have certainly captured my attention and you have hit the nail on the head. We (that is everyone) need to go in with an open mind.
There is certainly something about heading off for the day for a walk with no real agenda or destination and just seeing what may turn up.
I was only thinking this evening that I need to get back up to the Wattle Hills area this year again. I also want to get back into the country around the Pascoe and to do some searching on the East coast.
Just got to get through some pretty big deadlines first then I may be able to get some breathing space again.
Forgot about the Bottles. All shapes and sizes, some really beautiful, from all around the World. South America and Asia have some georgeous ones, all different colours too. Then there are the full bottles, usually Vodka, Japanese whisky, and tins of Aussie Beer. Also Army "K" Ration tins. (Unopened.) One day I came across about a hundred or more 30cm Sawfish saws. Obviously the result of poaching. You very occasionally come across a Turtle shell. And we used to see Orcas travelling down the coast sometimes.
Car tyres. (New.) Dinghys which have drifted away from trawlers or Yachts. Underwater cameras (still in working order). I know where there is a great Divan-type seat, made from bush timber on Night Island. I've only ever seen one other like it, and that was recently, in the Walter Reid Centre, in Rockhampton.
I haven't even mentioned the wild life yet. Have you ever seen a cloud of hundreds of White Cockatoos lift off a paddock at the same instant? It really is something to see.
I'd better stop now, or you won't need to go to see it for yourselves. Cheers,
xina.

I took my wife and 2 teenage daughters in ot first Cape trip and it was not a fishing trip. We read up for months and planned where we wanted to go. The girls walked the beaches collected shells, took photos, looked at flowers and collected bits of wood etc from the beach. They still talk about it now and how they camped under the stars and swam at the waterfalls.
For me it was probably the same, except I had to focus more on where we were going, road conditions and repairing breakdowns, driving creeks and getting stuck on river exits. We all had a great time and had favorite memories of that trip.
I think because i was mentally preparing for the trip for ab out 2 years and working every weekend fixing things and getting the 4b ready that when the time came to go I was already in love with the Cape. There were a lot of challenges and dissapointments. I thing the place became a part of me and its something my wife doesnt understand.I keep going back but she says lets go somewhere new.
My mate mentioned to her yesterday that he was planning a fishing trip to the Cape in June this year, but she said I wasnt going this year.
He told me last night that all spots were taken and shame I didnt want to go.Thats a hard one having to stay behind.
A lot could happen detween now and then. Im not out of the race yet.

We need to organise a Capeyorker Tagalong tour, just for Capeyorker Forum members.I think from April to DEcember would be OK.
Those places make me want to sell up and pkend all my time travelling and a little bit of work to pay the bills. This 48 weeks work and four weeks holidays is crap.Should be other way round.

I am planning on a 2009 trip at the end of april.
so if something comes of the tagalong put me down as a starter
cheers
tony
ps. I only drive a toyota because the girls like it hehe :)
CampDog and Tony,
I think you guys may have started something here.....
Lets work on this idea and take the dates Tony has provided (April, 2009) and see how that works with others. I may be able to squeeze the info into the 2008 edition to see who else may be interested. Big question is: what will the agenda be on the trip and what are our main places to visit?
I will leave that one open to all you out there in forum land.

My wife was speaking to him and said John wont be going to the Cape this year, He is going to the Cook islands or Vanuatu. Our daughter finishes year 12 this year and we promised here a trip somewhere.
She told my mate not to mention the Cape but he couldnt tell me quick enough. Already 4 in the vehicle.
Id rather 3 weeks fishing the Cape than going overseas. Still time left for someone to have an unfortunate accident and have to pull out.
I think the wild turkey may come out in June.

Hi Campdog,
I call it "my country", but in truth, the first time I looked up the coast from the escarpment overlooking Temple Bay, it claimed me. I BELONG TO IT. That simple.
Sounds like it grabbed you the same way. I understand how you feel. Every single day, I wish I was back there. If I'd had my way, I never would have left. Maybe I'm a freak. I thought some of the other ladies would at least enjoy a trip up there from time to time. I've been down here for about 13 years now, but I'm still dying to get back up there. It could be worse, We might never have gotten to see it at all.
Cheers,
xina.

I hate to say it, but April 2009 looks like being the time I would be able to go, rather than August this year due to circumstances which may force me to miss this year. Family and money, what other reason would keep you home :(
Tagalong with you guys, sounds great :D

Yes it's amazing the effects trying to include a family in a trip has on planning, myself and the young bloke can go anytime, but try and plan around the wife and teenage daughter. I had planned for June this year but the other half has stocktaking in June so that's out, daughter has mid year exams and is on a N.T camp mid july to mid august which will leave me with end of august up till mid september or so but if the daughter come's along she will be missing out on to much school which I aint to keen on, so it may just be easier to plan the date for next year should be able to save a bit more cash and pick up a few more accessories to play around with by then too.

Tagalong sounds like a great idea, though, unfortunately I won't be able to participate.
I'm still going this August.
Next year, if I do head up that way, will spend a majority of our time in Lakefield NP.
Really not sure what's happening next year though, to much happening, potentially.

Back on topic.
I've noticed on a number of sites that women are the minority.
Don't know why this should be.
Perhaps they prefer to go out and do, rather than sit in front of a computer and talk about doing.
As for my better half, she is almost totally computer illiterate, and has no desire to change.

I am married to her identical sister mate
Believe me guys, I'd much rather be up there "doing" than sitting here wishing there was more action on any of the threads. Just wish I could afford to buy " Black Poles" at Portland Roads.

i'm all for the laugh of the bikini shot as long as it isn't a thong bikini!!
don't really think that you need to do anything to get girls on the forum. its all for fun and they can join in if they want.
