G'day folks,
Later this year my wife & I will be heading off on an 18 month adventure around Australia in our Nissan Civilian motorhome, towing a pair of off road motorcycles.

We would love to get up to the top of Cape York & across to the the islands, & clearly the Civilian is not the vehicle to do this. I did hear somewhere that a cargo ship sails between Karumba & Weipa & can take a small number of passengers. Can anyone confirm if this is so, & if so point me to where I might find details (eg.cost, frequency etc)?

We would like to leave the bus at Karumba/Normanton, put the bikes & camping gear on the ship & ride from Weipa to the top & back. Is this feasible? Any advice welcome.

regards
Cuppa

G'day Cuppa,
There is a barge that runs from Karumba to Weipa but I do not think that it takes passengers. Check with Perkins Shipping/Gulf Freight Services.

From memory, the only barge that can take passengers departs from Cairns and it is either Sea Swift or Endeavor.

As far as the motorcycles going from Weipa to the tip and back- this is certainly possible and a few tour groups do this quite regularly.

Why don't you leave the bus in Cairns and do the trip from Cairns Return? Certainly much less to deal with logistically and you also get to see much more of the cape. You can then drop into places such as Laura, Musgrave, Coen, etc and see all they have to offer as well.

Would the bus not make it to Weipa?
