G'day Greg, I have a 8000lb Warn winch on my Hilux and it does the job adequately. The biggest problem with it has been the solenoids which quite frankly are not up to the job asked of them and Warn should hang their head in shame, goes to show you don't get quality just by paying an inflated price. After changing to an aftermarket solenoid set up though it has been a good winch, I use it often to recover Nissans.

thanks for the reply, good to know that i will have to carry spare solenoids if i buy a warn, does that apply with all other winches as well with the solenoids, and what type of solenoids did you replace yours with, like is there a standard aftermaket type.
I have been watching e bay for a winch and have noticed that there is a aftermarket "solid state solenoid", that competition 4bys use, is that the replacement type
Cheers Greg

Yeah spot on Greg, the solid state are the go but honestly if you are only getting a winch in case you need it and you buy a new one the solenoids should last you a couple of trips at least. In my case I bought a secondhand one hoping to save money and started replacing solenoids one at a time because almost as soon as I replaced one another would stuff up. The Warn have four solenoids at about fifty dollars each and the solid state one at about two hundred dollars takes the place of all four and can be much easier mounted up in the engine bay out of the mud and weather. Hope that all makes a bit of sense to you.
cheers Steve.
p.s some of the 4wd sites such as outerlimits and 4wd monthly quite often have used winches etc for sale.
