THIS JUST A GENERAL QUESTION. How many driving Hour does it take to go from weipa to the TIP through the tele track. Driving sensibly with kids in back. Just give me an idea as to see how many stops we will be having going up to the tip. Also to work out how much fuel I will need.

I know it's a question a long the lines of How long is a piece of string but this will give me an understanding in time wise as the map only gives me KM and i don't know how slow we will be driving on the OTL.

Thanking you Yoyo

Yoyo,

The trip from Weipa to the Tip can be done in two (2) days. I'd go for three (3) if it were me.

First stop for me would be Bertie Creek to camp, then next day bypass Gunshot Creek around Heathlands, but double back to see the other side of Gunshot just so you can see it.

Carry on through to Canal Creek or Elliot Falls to set-up camp. Keep heading north up the OTL (Old Telegraph Track) til you get to Jardine, then follow the bush track left til you get out onto the main road that leads to the ferry. Drive into Bamaga, camp at Seisia or Loyalty Camp grounds or carry on a little further North and camp at Punsand Bay Camp Ground.

You can make a dash up to the tip that day - or if the kids are restless, wait til morning.

Others may feel differently about this. Any other suggestions anyone?

Thanks batesy, But I will definetly be doing Gunshot. I lay in bed thinking about it and other part of the cape i've seen on my DVD's I don't think it's normal for me to be obsest but CAPE has got this drug like addiction to it. Haven't been there but already know I love it.

Gunshot has to be a night mare not missed, we will be doing it as part of our trip, not my surf by the way:p

Gunshot was everything I expected, there are numerous access points, choose wisely grasshopper.

For me the real freckle clencher was Cypress Creek, I hated the sound of creeking timber under the vehicle as I drove over.
Hint, check the logs before crossing.
Better yet, watch as someone goes over before you, see which logs move and how much. Have someone guide you across, just for moral support if nothing else.

Hey, Nedly... you're a daft man ... er I mean Draftsmen, you keen to draft up a Cape York Itinerary for the next edition of the mag?

Or are you gonna save that fine piece of bound literature you had for mass publishing?!

Jury's still out on the mass publishing idea.
I'll send you up a copy of the itinery if you really want one, I'll trim it down a bit though, get rid of some of the superfluous stuff.
Maybe the bits I have copied from other sources.
Might even run a spell check

Yeah, a case of B&C should cover the cost and effort :)

We are first timers to the Cape and keen for any advice. Travelling with a 3yr old so had decided not to tackle anything difficult. Planning to ask as we go and decide as we get to the stop for the night and take it form there. We have a prado and off road camper trailer set up. Unfortunately we will have about 12 days to do the Cape from Cairns rtn.

Any suggestions on must do and must not dos?

12 days isnt a lot of time to see the Cape, but still enough to get bitten by the Cape bug and go longer next time.
You could go direct to the top and work your way back or vise versa.
Just to give you an idea on what ive done on our first trip, but we were gone from Cairns 20 days with a Trailer.

Day 1 - Cairns to Lions Den Hotel via the Daintree / Bloomfield Track
Day 2 - Lions Den Hotel - Cooktown - Hopevale (colored Sands) camp at isabella falls on Battlecamp Road.
Day 3 - Isabella Falls - Old Laura Homestead- Lakefield National Park ( lilly lagoons)- camp overnight at Musgrave .
Day 4 - Musgrave - Coen - Archer River ( camp on banks of Archer River near Roadhouse.
Day 5 - Archer River to Weipa - Camp at Weipa Camp and caravan Park

Day 6 - Look around Weipa, good place for a rest and restock grocery supplies.
Day 7 Weipa - Batavia Downs to Telegraph Track- Morton Telegraph Station.-Bramwell Junction - Decide whether Develoment Road or Tele track
You could make it to Elliot or twin falls to find a camping spot for night.

Day 8 - would get you to Seisha or Punsand Bay at the top.
Day 9 - Look around and visit the tip.
Day 10 would see you heading home and a good day would get you back to Archer River Roadhouse to camp
Day 11 would get yo to say Haan River Road house with ease

Day 12 would get you back to cairns.

thats only an idea on where I have got to in that sort of time frame, but Im a slug on the road and love to look around. You could probably get furthe in a day but I like to go easy .
Get hold of Ron Moons Cape book and get a few ideas on what you want to see.You could always bypass Weipa nd keep going and pull in on way back if time.
