Well, folks, here's the latest news... the highly esteemed publication that is Cape Yorker is now under the sole ownership of Ant.
Yep, that's right, Batesy has bailed out..!!
It's been a while coming but I think it was always destined to work out this way. Anthony has been a wonderful motivator and partner in this effort so it is only right that he take on the full BURDEN of ownership! Ha ha..
Trying to start and run a magazine is a tough business. The missus and I really punished ourselves back in 2005 when we put together that tiny first edition. Originally I had envisioned a 200 page QUARTERLY publication!! What a bloody moronic idea that was!
I racked up an unbelievable amount of kilometres trying to make that first issue happen. I door knocked ever man and his dog trying to interest anyone with advertising and promotion. I targeted Cape businesses, I hassled scores of Cairns businesses, a dozen gulf country businesses ... I worked my ring off ... I've never been so ecstatic (getting an ad) or demoralised (shown the door).
The frustration nearly broke me. It was so heartbreaking to go to print with 32 pages - what a let down from an ambitious 200 pages. The fact that we had no idea how to even make a magazine just made the experience even tougher.
Fast forward to the 2007 edition.
I had promised myself that I never ever wanted to be involved in a magazine ever again after the first edition. I hated being a salesman, I hated throwing money away, I hated being everything to everyone. And yet ... we couldn't give up the baby.
Then along came Anthony. 5 months of butting of heads against walls finally produced the 180 page 2007 Edition. The feedback has been terrific. The magazine is distributed nationally in newsagents. We get phone calls and letters of support.
But my heart truly isn't in it...
I love to read magazines and I love Cape York. What I don't love is being the fella that brings both of these loves together.
So as of a couple of days ago, Anthony is the kingpin. He's the guy who has the commitment and drive to make Cape Yorker something special. Anthony has that 'EverReady Bunny' thing happening - he just doesn't stop. You'll find his quickly graying head pressed against a computer screen or phone 24/7!
Me ... well motivation finds me surfing the net for electric sports cars (http://www.teslamotors.com/design/gallery-body.php) and hilarious videos (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=bErBZ5XexV8). Anything that allows me to avoid doing magazine work! :)
Personally I believe that the magazine will only grow over time and judging by reader's responses it seems like it has some great support. Of course I'll be logging onto this forum and also contributing an article or two in the next edition. But that's it for me.
My wife and I have other plans. Our future endeavors will hopefully be in book publishing. We plan on printing my novel (if I ever finish writing it) and some children's books - both featuring Cape York.
Hopefully I can convince you mob to buy 'em...!!
Cheers
