Definately planning on getting back up there next year, not sure what date though.
Have only been back 3 days, in a way I'm still up there, well the head is anyway.
Not sure what is "normal" weather for up that way, however this year it was windy all the time we were there, with a couple of rainy days thrown in for good measure.
Apparently Aug is the worst month for fishing.

Its normally windy on the east coast and rainy days are not uncommon.
My favorite time is april when everything is still geen and dust free and the fishing is great. A bit warmer in april but nothing a few beers wont fix.

To tell the truth I dont think a day goes by without thinking about the cape and the next trip.I think I could easily sell up and live on the cape or work with a tourist operator. everyone is allowed one dream I suppose.

How's those MRX shares treating you Sam?
Don't seem to want to get going again do they? Should have traded at 18c and then bought again at 11c ... or you could have bought 4 cartons of rum with the profits!!

I bought another $1000 recently and I have just bought about $5000 rio share and have leveraged them against a 20,000k margin loan so the future should be looking bright for me another house by the start of next year hopefully.
So you bought any yet batesy or are you still procastonating?

I'm gonna sit back and wait a few months... there's definitely got to be more drama coming out of the US and from here too. From what I can gather nobody is sure who's house all this risky debt is sleeping in.
I'm not that keen on MRX anymore - even though I suggested it to you!! I'm steering towards stronger stocks.
I'm thinking a margin loan towards the end of year. Several stocks, maybe St George Bank, Commonwealth Bank, Origin Energy, Woolworths and Boral as an outsider!!
Of course... I don't have a clue about the stockmarket so these could prove to be very average choices!! :)
Maybe Burdekinbarra could enlighten us?
Are you sure another house is worth it? I think I read somewhere that BHP shares outperformed the housing market by double in the last 5 years.
And I wonder how much equity is to be had from real estate in the next five years.

Windy is ok as my mate is alergic to the migs you get up there and hopefully they will keep the buggers at bay - also keeps mossies to a minimum as well.

The way Campdog described the weather for August is exactly what we had up there this August just gone, and yes the breeze did keep ninety nine percent of the insects away.

Better rephrase windy, the reason there are migies and mossies on the west coast is because they were blown over there and too hard to fly back.

Lushy sorry for the grave dig (Almost) I only just joined the Forum. But we (Dad & I) Will be coming from Knox (Vic) on the 8th of Aug heading up (Cant do the week earlier due to work). Were hoping to take the Vans to Weipa then doing the rest in a tent  .
We will probably be on Ch24 UHF most of the time. Or VKS also (V2346 & V1233)
I just hope 6 weeks will be long enough, if not I don't like work that much anyway so might not come back. ;)

Sorry to come in late here guys but here is my two cents worth.
Time of year (for fishing) April is good but can run the risk of a late wet/cyclone.
June through to August has the reputation for being 'slower' for fishing. The cape still fishes well during these months if you know where to go and what to look for.
Sept-Dec would be my favourite time for the cape. Things are starting to heat up (in more ways than one) and the fish activity picks up with the buildup. Of course the weather turns a lot of people away.
There are a few questions you have to ask.
Firstly, will you have a boat?
Secondly, what sort of fishing are you planning on doing (bait, lure, fly, etc)
As for fishing gear (rods, reels, lures, etc) it will depend on what you plan to do.
In regards to lure gear, I fish 'light' (according to the general population). My preferred rod is a baitcaster in the 2-4kg range and usually around the 5.10 length (single piece too). A rod any heavier is (in my opinion) harder to cast and less 'sensitive' when working lures. I have caught barra over a metre on 2-4kg rods and king salmon well over the metre mark on the same rods. I lived in Weipa for over four years and NEVER used a rod over 2-4 kg for my lure fishing and NEVER had a fish that I couldn't catch on the tackle. Also never broke a rod. Not 'blowing my trumpet' here but trying to put things in perspective.
Gladiator Tackle have just released a new rod (SnakeSkin Sports) that I am very keen to take up on my next trip.
Hope this helps and that it is also not too late.

Cheers Ant & to answer for me, we dont have a boat & would probably try Lure fishing as then we dont have to carry bait. We are simple fisherfolk & do it more to pass time than break any records of fish caught. 1 or 2 in a trip is plenty for us.
Ive read your other posts on fishing the cape & hope many more come between now & when we leave.

As I said definately planning on going back this year.
We will be leaving Brisbane either 25 July or 1 August, returning 4 weeks later.
It's amazing, it has been less than 5 months since we got back and I am starting to get excited about the trip already.
Only 7 months to go.

We should be close to each other at Cairns I would say, so we will be on a simalar treck should be at wiepa about the 9/10 august.
We will need traffic lights at Coen to control the flow north.
I can provide my Mobile No, if wanted

Not intending on going to Cairns this year, will probably turn left at Innisfail.
We will most likely be leaving Weipa on the 8th.
Mobiles not much use up there last year, only CDMA in Weipa, though it all changes this year doesn't it?
Last year we turned our phones off when we left Cairns.

Looks like I will be seeing some of you blokes in August now as well. I had planned to be up the cape june through to july but the missus has end of year stock taking in june ,mid year exams for the daughter the in laws 60th birthday party, so I am going no where for now but august is alright the last trip was august 98 so it's good make the next one 10 years later aug08. It'll give me time to save a few more dollars for the missus and kids to spend. lol

I wonder how different the cape will be for you this time round?
Is the weather any different than any other year up there?
Should we expect big changes if there is more than usual storms, floods ect?
Its great to think so many on this forum will be going to the cape at the same time.
Should be a real hoot !!

I am expecting to see more tar then the last visit, from what I have seen of pictures of Gunshot over the years it looks completely different now to when I was last there, now there's a bridge over the Wenlock, wasn't there on the last visit, but yeah will be good to see it again to see what changes there are to the place.

G'Day Lushy,
The Coen races have not been on for about 7 or 8 years. The local Chamber of Commerce is looking at starting the event up and holding it annualy. Even is this does happen, it wont be until at next year at the earliest.
There are the races held annually at Laura but you wont have to worry about them either as they were held a couple of weeks ago.
Have a good trip

Hi WORKING NAVARA,
You'll be fine on the OTL, there's usually someone not far away.
See if you can time your start for the morning, there were a few people camped behind Bramwell Junction last year ready for an early start on the track.

Did the cape get any of that rain that NQ got recently?
If it did I would imagine there would not be very many happy campers around.
I'm in the weipa campground at the moment and shes nearly full.
Heading up the telegraph tomorrow so will see how many are heading up further.
Cheers

I would have thought it would have been a quiet season this year due to everyone saving up to go to the games in Beijing. This has not been the case though. I heard that accomodation is very expensive and that the athletes even had trouble trying to get some.
Maybe most people have decided to spend their money on a trip up the cape?
Good for me as i generally do most of my fishing when you guys have gone home at the end of the year. ( Leave some fish for me by the way)
Also good to know Weipa Campground is in full swing.
Last week the weather was pretty poor but friday turned out to be good so went out saturday and sunday in the boat to fish a jew hole. Bloody roughed up didnt it. First day back at work yesterday and the ocean is like a mirror. GRRrrrrrrr.
Today is pretty good here asa well.
Cheers,
