Reading Moon's book I keep seeing comments like "get this pass from National Parks, Cairns" or "get this permit from such and such in Cooktown"

I head off in 3 weeks. Usual stuff, OTL, gold fields, Lakefield, Wiepa, Billy's etc as I go to the Tip. Do I need to organise passes or permits for camping etc before I get up there or can I get things as I go ??

We've been back 3 weeks. Captain Billy, Chilli Beach, Hann Crossing, Old Laura Homestead all had self registration at the sites. Noah Beach had to be booked beforehand. When we were at Chilli Beach there were some disappointed people who went to the ranger station first and paid their fees only to get to Chilli Beach to find no campsites left. They wasted about 40 mins doing this and were not happy especially seeing there were some great large campsites that were reserved for commercial operators. We were there for 3 days and these sites remained vacant. Have great time. We did.

What about for the mouth of the Pennefeather. Do I need a pass in advance for that area ???

G'day Sippy,

Sorry for the lack of response ... I've been slack.

You are supposed to have a permit for Pennefather. It's $30 for vehicles (valid for thirty days). I think it is also an extra $5 per person per night for camping. The permit also covers access to Stones Crossing.

Permits can be picked up at the Weipa Camping Ground.

You can call the camp ground for more details -
their number is (07) 4069 7871

Hope this helps.

Cheers
Batesy

Thanks Batesy. I leave tomorrow. I will chase that up when I get to Wiepa.
