I just caught a bloody big barra. I've only ever caught one barra in my entire life and a few hours ago I caught number two.

I'm ecstatic .. but pissed off too.

The mob I went fishing with were about 300 meters away so didn't see the fish. Plus I didn't get a Weipa Fishing Classic measuring sticker for the catch and release comp - nor did I have a camera.

So why is this a problem?

Well, I released the fish because it was 113.5cm!!!

I'm not sure what to say... but now I can appreciate the fishing thrill when you land a big barra. I feel like I'm on cloud 9.

Of course, I know none of you bastards will believe me. I've also had a harsh word to Ant for drumming into me that the big ones have to be released to breed.

All I have to show is half a dozen scales, a cut hand and some bent treble hooks.

Good fun though!!

Good on you Batesy. I find it a bit difficult to reason the logic of releasing the big one's to breed when they have probably already done so anyway,I always thought that if you threw the little ones back they would grow into bigger ones and breed, but then again I'm no piscotorial expert.

Damn... just got back from the fishing comp. Biggest Barra today was 72cm. A total of 41cm smaller than the bugger I caught. I'm such a dumbarse for not having the camera.

I believe you Batesy, Toyota drivers dont tell lies. When I first saw the thumb nails I thought the scales were bandaids and you had hooked yourself with the lure.
You know you caught it, thats all that counts.

Batesy Don't know what to say. Well done I suppose.

Fellas on the forum that are taking advice from ANT and Batesy be warned. They seem to be nice blokes and they are BUT I had the priveledge of meeting both fine men and they are really helpfull, UNTILL you talk about fishing spots.

I asked batesy were to catch some fish when i was at weipa maybe a barra and he tells me " I am not a fisherman and don't have any idea" (I sort of gathered that being a toyota driver) AND THEN he shows and skites about catching a 113.56784567 cm barra

Ant on the other hand tells me about this spot to get crabs from the rocks with spear or net so Of Riley and I go Mud crab hunting for around 1 1/2 hours. We nearly died out there. He sent us to this spot were there were SEA SNAKES AND THE BIGGEST MOTHER OF A STONE FISH i had ever seen.

By the way ANT thanks for the heads up on all the things that want to kill you up at the cape. When we were there we were carefull of crocs like you said but when you put your foot 10cm from a stone fish and you have sea snakes running between your legs crocs were the last thing we were thinking about.

By the way no crabs for dinner that night either. I know you wanted to get back at all the toyota jokes i said but geez. they were only jokes

Yoyo, did you get to meet the friendly lady at the Weipa camp ground who greeted eveyone and then tried to sell mud crabs for $24 a kilo.

Let me tell ya, Yoyo, me catching a fish is just an absolute fluke ... I've been back to the same spot a few times and can't even catch a snag.

No didn't meet her. I was hoping to meet these other local blokes that few nights beore were selling lobsters medium for $15 and big suckers for $20 I was looking forward to them coming but no luck.
The only thing that bugged me a little at the camping ground was the fellas trying to sell you a day charter for $660. The boat was lucky to be 18ft with a 90ho tohaitsu. Kept me standing there for over an hour trying to sell me something. Kept on saying No thanks try some one else but Persistant.
(If I was to open a Realestate office he will be my manager.)

Probably the local Toyota salesman, If you stoop low enough to sell one of those you will try and sell anything.

Well done Batesy.... doesnt it piss you right off...you take your camera and dont catch a thing...leave the camer at home and catch the fish of a lifetime...then you never forget your camera ever again and never see a fish that good. Now that you definitely have the "barra bug" you will probably want to get out there more often. good on you mate
