View Full Version : Cape Trip for July
Hi all,
I have been back for about a week now and feels like I have never left. Had a great trip up and fished both the fresh and salt. Don;t have too much time to write about the whole trip but here are a few pics. All up, we took around 6-700 photos. total costs with two vehicles and five blokes (fuel, food, accom, fishing tackle and grog) came out to $100.00 per day per person ($500.00) per day. This was for 9 days in total.
Don't have time to add captions or explain pics but in a nutshell, we fished maily with custom rods, and were up there to test/review tackle (rods, reels, lures).
More pics.
Road on the way up was messy aroung Musgrave. Parts of it were done in 4wd and even then it got a little interesting.
Last lot of pics.
All up, we caught 18 species of fish on the trip. Kept only two barra and had them for brekkie one morning. All other fish were released.
On the whole, fishing was a little slow and this was mainly due to the cooler weather.
Planning to get back up there a few more times this year.

Looks like a lot of fun Ant.You must have done a fair bit of travelling going by the cost, ot a lot of grog.
I used to build rods for a few years and loved testing them out.I built up a dyco blank I found in my cupboard early this year. Its about 20 years old but boy it works well on bass etc.
I think being based around Cairns would be great. A weekend to Lakefield every know and then or a weekend at Weipa.
Ant, just wondereing whether you use a digital SLR camera.

I bet if you ask the other three fellas what the worst part of the trip was ... they reply: putting up with Ant...!!
Several days with Ant .... talk about a high price to pay for a fishing trip!
Too rich for my blood! :)

Batesy, for nine days fishing on the Cape I could put up with anyone. Could even travel there in an old toyota and drink 4x.
Costs may seem high but when you look at it: $100.00 a day to spend on the cape in pristine areas fully catered is pocket money. Try going anywhere on holidays and only spending $100.00 a day for everything.
Campdog: I am probably one of the last few who still shoot slide film with my SLR cameras. After spending thousands of dollars on my camera gear, I cannot justify the change to SLR digital at this stage. I do own a digital (Olympus 770SW) which I use for a lot of 'general' shots and it is just fine for all of that. personally, slide is a higher quality than digital but the time will come when I retire the slide gear and it will be a sad day.

I dont think is too high. when I take my family its about 100 a day pus all the food we packed before we go and normally about 1k a week.or 6k for 6 weeks
Out last fisfing trip was 21 days away and was about $750 per head for 3 people, but our trip was home - viriya- fish and home. But im not going to the places you go to .PRICELESS
I use a Kodak P880 8mp camera and thought of changing to an SLR so looking around for any advice.I get some nice photos but I know there are better options for a camera.
Campdog: When I make the move it will be to a Nikon Digital SLR. At this stage the D200 is my pick.

Darren Rowse from Livingroom.com.au (http://www.livingroom.org.au) has a pretty comprehensive site dedicated to Camera Reviews.
The Nikon D70 was the duck's nuts for amateurs just a few years back, now you can get them nice and cheap. They're only 6 Mega Pixels, but realistically the average punter doesn't really need much more. We did most of the first Cape Yorker Mag on a 5MP Kodak jobby.
I'm not sure if Kerry Trapnell is still lurking on this forum, but if you're around Kerry, I'd love to hear what you think is the best buy for the average-Joe.

Oh yeah, one more thing ... we have bought 2 cameras on Ebay ... an 8MP and 10MP casio. Both came from Hong Kong. Both were about 500 bucks, which saved us 250 bucks from Aussie retail.
Delivery to Weipa took 3 days ... from Hong Kong!! Usually we have to wait 2 weeks to get a book from Brisbane!
As for service ... one of the cameras had a lens issue due to opening in its case ... the Australian office of the manufacturers replaced it under warranty. This was always a concern for us when it came to electronics on ebay.

Looking forward to it.The camera I have is probably good enough for me but I like the idea of playing with shutter speeds etc etc. If kerry is still about I wouldnt mind a being pushed in the right direction for a SLR.
