NAtional parks web site has some good info on Lakefield, I came in from cooktown last year and camped at old laura homestead (free camp)and called into the rangers station at old laura the next morning and got a spot at mick finns waterhole, great spot, a lot of the more family spots are pre booked but the ranger at lakefield will help you out.Its usually pretty busy there in the school holidays.good fishing and some big crocs.
Go to the national parks office in cooktown and they can help you as well. Its near the fish shop on the LHS far end of town.
Or go to the cooktown shire site is has some good info and links.

There's a few good spots along the Kennedy River in the Park.
Coming from Cooktown the obvious choices for camping are the waterholes because they are some of the first ones you come across. We avoided these because they already had other campers (1 car! But we didn't want to spoil their day).
Personally we like the furtherest camp area within the park - the area on the banks of the Normanby. Heaps of flat ground.
1. Normanby River
2. Normanby Camp Area
3. One of the signposted Camp spots on the Kennedy
4. 'Welcome Waterhole' ... I think.
5. Can't recall what waterhole this is.
