The boys have finally barreled into Weipa this morning.

Apparently they've had a good run so far and are keen to wet a line.

Here's a few pics of the boys and their rigs.

We went down to 10.2 degrees a few nights back - almost coldest on record. Back to 13-14 now. We are still getting 28degrees during the day though!

Don't envy you down there Cookie. Cold and wet, not a good combination - especially flooding.

Oh, well, at least you can fish from your front door!

Cookie, a couple of the hills are steep but they are all-weather roads (concrete) now. You won't have any problems with them.

The only river crossing is at Bloomfield, it has a causeway now so you don't have to worry about the tidal movement anymore.

Personally I think I'd be doing the Cape Trib section on the way up. Far more interesting drive. Unless you're like Nedly, who is stopping in at Maytown (Palmer River Goldfields) which is the inland road that most of us use to 'race' down to Cairns from the Cape.

Yoyo and Riley said they ran out of time whilst doing the Cape Trib road - they thought they could get to Endeavour Falls to camp but they only made it as far as the Lions Den (about 60km shy).

hey cookie ive done that drive about 4 times in the last 2 years and even in the rain its not a prob, they have concreted all the steep bits, you will cross three creeks , all of them shallow and firm so no worries . its a very nice drive, after bloomfeild river its just a normal dirt road to the den then tar to cooktown . when are you gonna be up there , we go in one week

Should I stand there with or without a snatch strap?

You drive a toyota, I suppose you will have to stand there with a snatch strap.
Be more natural that way, having the Nissan to recover you :)

Where did that come from ?
I doubt very much that you would be racing on the tracks we will be taking.
From the info I have at hand, we will leave the tar before reaching Kuranda, and we cross tar only once before getting to Laura.
At least, I hope that is the case, be VERY disappointed if it is 4 lanes all the way.

We will be taking our time heading back South, 4 days from Musgrave to Port Douglas.

A real adventure into maytown is via the old coach road, havent done it yet but supposed to be a challenge.
Sounds like fun leaving the tar before kuranda, how about some trek notes when you get back.

Yeah, I meant that only Cape locals use the inland track to 'race' into town (Cairns) or people like yourself who want access to Maytown etc ... and of course travellers heading home. (pretty much everyone then, I guess!!)

Nedly, I can't remember if you were going through Chillagoe and around the back way into Palmerville or if you are going north through Mt Molloy - Mt Carbine - then Maytown via the turn off that is 25 kms short of Palmer River Roadhouse?

Either way, you'll be getting a good deal of bitumen after Kuranda. Almost all tar to Chillagoe and definitely all tar to Bonnie-Glen turnoff near Palmer Roadhouse.

Campdog, the old coach road is one of the most enjoyable trips in the Cape. I absolutely love the Palmer. Travel in with a good topo map and a metal detector and you can spend days mucking about.

Anyone planning the old coach road trip needs to read Hector Holthouse's 'River of Gold' before going in. It will only add to the experience.

I'm getting ichy feet just thinking about it. Winter camping on the Palmer - gold fever and four-wheel-driving.

You can't access Maytown from Chillagoe, the track has been closed at Palmerville.
We will be turning off before we reach Kuranda, hope to hit dirt straight away.

Don't get caught with that metal detector, it's illegal to carry one in the area without the appropriate paperwork.
You're right about the book, the reason we're heading into that part of the country is because of it.

For those who do want to scratch around for a bit of alluvial gold you can get a licence from the 'Miner's Den' in Cairns ... they used to be about 20 bucks i think.

We will be turning off before we reach Kuranda, hope to hit dirt straight away.

Nedly, you'll still have about 200km of bitumen after Kuranda.

Kuranda - Mareeba - Molloy - Carbine - then you'll get dirt at the Maytown turn off.

Be very carefull - It's not so hard to replace the 'P' in your name with a 'CK' and the 'M' with a 'T'. :)

If you then replace the 'K' with another 'T' you get a name that some may use to describe a forum moderator, not that I have anybody in mind though.
p.s thanks for the info about the crowds.

More like Toyotalk, using words like bugger.
Using words like "clever" seems a little out of place for Toyota drivers though, unless they are talking about Nissan's that is.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

then all you got to do is change the D to a CH and put ima before the first T and i think you get pretty close to a certain north queensland magazine magnate
