I have a question. Probably for Campdog, seeing as he lives down this way.

1) What is the quickest route from Sydney to Brisbane. New England or Pacific Highway?

2) What is the fastest route from Brisbane to Cairns? The coastal 'Bruce' Highway or the Inland route through Charters Towers?

I will be going flat tack and want to save on time, fuel etc etc.

What do you recommend?

Dan

Dan, I always run through Tamworth, Armidale, Tenterfield etc when I go Sydney - Brisbane. Less Traffic and more open road.

As for Bris - Cairns, always straight up the coast.

Others may disagree.

dann, if you don't have a need to go to Brisbane you can save a lot of time by bypassing it and using the Newell highway, have done this many times and it is a good road but watch out for the trucks.

Travelmate.com will show you the quickest and the shortest, I travel the coast mainly for better roads and I travel of a night a lot so less animals.I have only been to Biloela inland.

Sydney to Cairns via the coast is about 2700ks.

Sydney - Brisbane via coast is quicker though very boring.
Brisbane - Cairns via the coast is much shorter than the inland route.

I agree with Campdog on travelling at night.

Cruise the New England the Pacific Hwy sucks 2 many fast moving trucks running express, I prefer the New England, nicer drive.

I like the drive from brisbane to cairns as well, the pacific highway can be a bit scary sometimes.

New England is a much nicer and friendlier (?) drive.
Some great places to stop for a feed and chat, particularly some of the pubs in Tenterfield :)

I might do a drive that way, up over the range from here to Armidale and the New England.

If you are stopping at Armidale we found 'The Cattlemans Motel' quite comfortable.
The food in the in-house restaurant was great, couldn't fault it.
While at Armidale make sure you check out Petersons Winery, bit pricey but excellant wines.
Bit of history in the place as well........

Which forum is this ?
This isn't the Armida.......

Ooops

Hi,

Thanks for the info. I will however be going flat out. Only stopping to change drivers (and pee).

So just after the quickest route.

On our last trip we left home at 4.am to yepoon at 6.30pm and next day drove to Hann River Road house and next day to Varilya Point. You can Cover some ground wiyh a couple of drivers.
The pacific highway is a hive of activity with road works all the way from Buladelah to the borde. If you go that way make sure its night time or Weekends.
