This place is worth a look. A bit of Cape History.
Just turn off onto the Iron range national park on the Chili beach road. Follow it to the wenlock river, cross the river and hang a left and follow track past old grave around to the old mine area, also some great campsites on the wenlock.about 30 min drive from main road.

I stand in Awe each time I visit this area. Absolutely amazing to think of what it was like back then. There is a good book on the history and the area-can't remember the name of it at the moment but will try to get it soon.
PS: some very good fishing not too far from here too.

Some great shots, will look for this place as we head to Chilli Beach.
We will also be heading to Maytown, another gold mining area, hope to see some good relics there as well.

Let me know if you can, I love reading anything I can about the Cape.
It took 6 months to get a rock crusher from weipa to the gokd fields with bullock and horse teams, Must have been hard work.

Campdog, I think the book Ant is talking about is "Battlers in the Bush" written by Joe Fischer. Joe's in his late 80s now I think. Lives in the Territory. The book is a great read.

A good mate of mine wrote a book called "Angor to Zillmanton"
It's about lost mining towns of North Queensland. He's been to all of them and includes gps references. http://desertedtownsatoz.com/

Hey Googy, thanks for this.
I'll call into one of the Brissy stockists in the next day or so and grab a copy, looks to be very interesting.

The bloke who wrote it is a mining engineer I've known since I was an apprentice. Probly one of the smartest people I've met but don't tell him that.

I think some things look better that way. I just changed it from colour to sepia with a photo program.

Great idea. My camera has a setting for this and SWMBO tells me our photo program can change the colour to sepia so all is not lost.
