I wasn't sure, thought it may of been some type of whaler or reef shark we were catching these things within 20 foot of the shore in a couple of feet of water. People were swimming in the same spot about 2 hours before. The same people came onto the beach and saw what we were catching reckoned they weren't going back in the water again the next day. lol

Black Tip Reef Shark.
They are a dime a dozen all around this end of the world. Usually pretty harmless but they have been known to take a piece out of a few people.

I would rather swim with them than the hammerheads and whites.

When I lived in Mackay, we would go down to the beach on a rising tide with a making moon and a carton of beer. Light a big bonfire and just sit on the beach and catch reefie after reefie-just for fun. Great times.

I don't think anyone eats reef sharks, I haven't heard of it Ant maybe able to answer that one.
I just threw them back in the water. They reminded me of Carp at the time.
I don't think a reefy would have much on the ol Gummy shark anyway.
It's hard to get a nice piece of Flake up this way 2 you ask 4 Flake and end up with Hake. Gotta say I miss the dayz we use to catch them down Venus Bay, Gunamatta, Sorrento back beach and Western Port Bay and down your way as well. ol Uncle Jeff was running the show down there then that's how long ago that was.

Little sharks are great fun, especially for the young fellas. Just make sure you have a heavy leader (wire is best) to avoid the bit-offs.

You can eat them, and yes it is called flake. Not too bad if you can get past the smell.

Rather throw them back and eat a mangrove jack, coral trout or threadfin salmon though.
