I normally carry about 40 litres and keep it full at creek crossings and roadhouses.Camp near water and you wont need to carry washing up water etc.

being on your honeymoon i think you will definetly need to keep the fluids up so i would think about 100litres. You need to keep yourselves hydrated and alcohol is not the best medicine after a hard nights work. (Take it easy and don't tear a muscle remember to do some warm ups as help is far away)

There is a plenty of creeks up there the water is clean and crystal clear completely safe for drinking you can always boil the water if you wanted to be extra safe.

Dont contaminate one container of water with water from another creek. A bit like fuel, keep them seperate incase one is crook.

Campdog are you suggesting that 1 or more of the rivers/creek water is no good for drinking, there is not 1 river in the Vic high Country I wouldn't drink out of, I would of thought it would be the same in Far north Qld. Apart from the one's affected by the salt water.

Not no the river but certain parts , like getting water from the river where it is a popular Cape Camping area on the Banks of the river. By July August you will find out by the number of human Landmines. Some places stink with rubbish and Crap.Or swampy areas where wild pigs might be drinking.
Also some parts could be brackish if you are close to the coast. As long as its flowing and clear I have no hesitations in drinking the water up there. I just choose carefully where I get it from. Most te creeks on the development road are brown from the vehicles stirring it up.

The water you can get out of the creeks up the cape is probably better then what you get out of your taps at home but as John said you don't know what pollutants are in the water remembering that wildlife up there use this water as well, and there is the human factor late season there is quite a few uncovered landmines around, I know cause I stood in one these and was forced to throw my thongs away. Could of been worse I could of had bare feet. YUK

THe Cape is a beautiful place and well worth the effort to visit, but I cant understand why people can litter sutch a place. Im sure they dont do it in their own back yards. There a signs up everywhere letting people know where to put rubbish, and common sense says if you need to go to the loo, dont go in the sand near the water or where people camp and use a shovel and bury it, not leave little flags of white paper every where.
Even at the carpark to walk out to the tip can be pretty bad.My kids first thought was,is this why they call it the tip dad.
Even gunshot was left a mess last year where people left bags of rubbish and was scattered everywhere by the dingoes and other critters.

Do they still have those big rubbish pits up there for travellers to leave their rubbish at or have they done away with them.

The pits are still located near camp areas and towns./ roadhouses they still get used but not by all.

There is no excuse for littering especially when there are places to dump your rubbish, and I'm guess they are free to are they.

Yes they are free to use they are just pits for everyone to throw there rubbish in as John said they R just off to the side of roads near campgrounds and towns, when they are full they just cover the rubbish up with dirt, not sure if they burn it before they cover it or not.

I camp on a river property on the macleay river west of kempsey and a beautiful place.About 3 years ago a few families arrived and spent the weekend there. The people had rubbish and sh#t everywhere. The manager of the property asked them to clean up there rubbish, they told him to f off, its your proprerty so you clean it up.Since tthat date no camping signs have been erected to keep people out.
Fortunately we have been allowed to keep going there as we always look after the place. Last weekend we had about 5km of riverfront to ourselves for 3 days.

Unfortunately that seems to be the way it is these days. Hopefully with forums like this there may be more public awareness. Wouldn't it be great if there were more public awareness through the media. If it does not get better, we may all lose what we have got. I cant believe how much we have lost in the last 20 years. If something doesnt happen, my kids wont be able to experience what we have.....

your right on the money there, when there was that talk about a sealed road going through Cape York for the pipe line straight away I thought that's it 4 the Cape imagine it with every yahoo and his dog driving up there in their Clubsports and KIA run arounds, rubbish flying out car windows every where.
Hope I don't see that day.

I think a sealed or all weather road to weipa is going to happen especially more so when weipa becomes a municipality rather thas under the control of Comalco. From what ive heard it will happen.
Just as long as teh Tele track is left open.

As Campdog said, they may seal the road to Weipa, however tourism is CYP's main industry and driving 'the track' is a big part of its attraction.
It would be economic suicide to seal it.

As mentioned I think it would be a real shame.

People were towing their caravans to Cairns and doing the cape in the 4wd. Now its tar to Cooktown or Lakeland. Wont be long then its Laura,Musgrave , Archer then Weipa. I dred the day of being stuck behing a caravan on a cape road.

Nice spot there campdog, I like the way you set up your tarp. Ive taken some ideas for myself as ive haven't had luck in the windy weather. As far as the sealed roads are concerned I would like to see everything left as it is for future generations to enjoy but tar is inevetable

If you go anywhere neae the east coast be prepared for windy weather. My tarp is 24x30ft to allow for a bit of adjustment.

I went back and lived on Wattle Hill for a while in 1993, and during that time some scientific people were up doing all sorts of tests, and the water was rated as the closest to rainwater they had ever seen. Apparently it comes under the sea from New Guinea, so gets very well filtered before it gets here.
I assume the same would apply to the west coast as well, and going up the to the Tip. (In fact it was almost too pure. Nothing can live in pure water.)
