View Full Version : Weipa Fishing Options
Only recently found this site and the mag.
Had to join up straight away.
Friends & family are visiting Weipa around 26 July on the way to the Tip. I was interested in a spot of fishing whilst in Weipa. Any suggestions as to boat hire or day guiding options?
I'm going to Weipa in Sep, I have booked a Charter out of Weipa Just ring the Weipa camp ground to book, I think it was about $220 each for a full day fishing the rivers and alittle bit more if you wanted to go out on the reef. Everything supplyed and they feed ya as well. Sounded good to me anyway.
Max- during that time of year, things usually get a little slower and you may be able to book a guide through the campgrounds for either a half or full day charter. The other option is to hire a boat yourself and go it alone. This is cheaper and can be fun checking things out for yourself. The ideal option would be to take a guide for one day and quizz them up on the area then head out the next on your own. The guides will not obviously give you all the info as they have to make a living but a good guide will give you some helpful pointers.
In regards to hire boats, if you have the new mag there is a write up I did in there on the boats that the campground have.
Hope this helps.
Figured it might be useful to some 'forumites' out there to know exactly what is available from weipa in regards to fishing options.
1: Full guided operations: There are three main full time guided operations working the area with an accumulated total of ten boats between them. There are also about another three to four part time guides there as well.
2: Hire boats; These are available from three operations. Firstly, the campground-they have the PolyCraft 4.55 boats. Secondly, Weipa Houseboats- Steve Wren will hire his tenders out if they are not being used by the houseboat clients. Steve has a range of boats to choose from. Thirdly, Pugwash has a few boats to hire as well.
3: Weipa Houseboats: owned by Steve Wren, there are now two houseboats operating in the area and are available to hire and drive by yourself. These are usually booked out for at least 3-4 days (more common for a week or sometimes more).
Hope that sheds some light on things. What you choose really depends on how much time you have, what you really want to get out of the trip and of course how much money you intend on spending. If you have the time and for value for money, the houseboats are my pick. Best to go with a group of around 5-6 people so you can share the cost.
Any more questions class???
