Without wanting to start a shit fight here have any of you fellas that have done some Cape driving got an opinion on tyres for the Cape?
I'm buying a new set for my trip and wondering what to get, I'm currently running Cooper St's but not happy with them because they keep ripping lugs off and ripping holes in the sidewalls (yes I do drop to 18 p.s.i offroad). The choices so far are Cooper STT's, Mickey thompson MTZ's, or Maxxis buckshots. As reliability and performance are the main criteria money is irrelevant, love to hear what you have to say.

Yeah, I've had Maxxis on my road cars before and was very happy with them, I would rate them as good as Michelin but was unable to buy them for a while, they seemed to go off the market for some reason but obviously are back now.

Cooper ST or Goodyear MTR, this was was a similar debate on the 4wd monthly forum 2 weeks ago in the General discussion section about cooper ST, STT Goodyears, Maxxis, Mickey T, I think most of the guys said go BFG M/T a few said they were the better tyre, check it out you will hear all kinds of opinions about what is best, soft side walls, Coopers chip on gravel and the lugs come off they cover most of the problems. I use BFG M/T have for the last 14 years I have try'd a few diffrent brands and have found BFG M/T to be the go They suit my needs I have found them to be a tough tyre, most of my driving is on dirt tracks, gravel roads they aren't so good on the sand as you could imagine but they do me, I fitted a new set before my last Cape trip didn't have a problem with em till I got to Beaudesert on the way back to Melb staked one on some steel reo sticking out of a concreate block in a carpark I thought that was ironic considering where I had just been Cape York and back , get a flat tyre in downtown Beaudesert. I haven't used Maxxis brand tyres I was offered a set of 35 inch last week for $230 a tyre from my mate at the local tyre shop I had a look at em but decided to stick to my beloved BFG, I had seen a lot of Maxxis mounted up on 4bys around town but from what I have heard from the blokes I work with that do Roo and Pig shooting on there dayz off they reckon the rubber is too soft and they get to many punctures compared to BFG and Cooppers, It's always a hard desicion to make buying tyres cause you get so many different opinions and when you read the comment's on the forums you just end up even more confused.

Thanks for the info Highlift 80, I actually went into a shop to price the BFG M/T and the bloke selling them talked me out of them, said they used to be a great tyre but have changed just recently and are getting problems with them, so as you say it just gets more confusing.

Yes I know what you mean I was going to try Cooper STT but was talked out of it by 1 tyre guy in Broken Hill he wanted to sell me Hankook or something and wanted me to wait around two days for him to get them freighted in from Adelaide so everywhere you go you will hear something different. I wasn't aware of any problems with the BFG M/T but I will see what I can find out from my mates at tyre shops in Dubbo and Melbourne.
I can't/won't get into the trye debate.
Choice of tyre really depends on what/where you are going to be using it. For those of you with the mag, there is an article on page 152 that goes into it a little.
For straight, down the line info on tyres for the cape, give Ross Sollitt (cairns trye specialists) a call as he stocks all types of tyres for the cape and will give you an honest answer on what tyre is best for your situation. Give him a call: 07 4051 1115.

Thanks for all the comments fella's, I'm leaning towards the Mickey Thompson more and more, just hope they don't puncture too easy as I don't want to overwork the WINCH WENCH too much with puncture repairs or she may be too tired at the end of the day to pitch the tent and cook my tea and I would probably have to get the beers out of the Waeco myself, that wouldn't be much of a holiday, she is lucky I'm so considerate.

Ol Roothy was using the Mickey T's on Milo at one stage and he reckoned they were the ducks guts, just looking at recent pictures of ol Milo and he's now got Cooper STT's on the ol girl. promo

I allways used mickey thompson claws. But wanted something for a bit of highway use aswell and still a bit agressive. The mickey mtz's work well.We will see who they handle the cape in 14 days time.
I had a set of maxxis buckshots 33's and i really liked them. They gave me lots of grip but the only negetive i can say about them is that they were a little bit soft and wore fast (on bitumen). I am now running Mickeys MTZ 315 75 16 and am very happy with them. I can't really fault them as yet. I have given them a bit of a test and they grip like extremely well for the pattern they run and clean them selfs out very quickly. I've had simex jungle trekkers34 and centipedes35 although they aren't in that class they arent very far behind.
How many are you buying as when i bought my they gave me a good deal for six a lot better than for four. I'll see if i can find receipt but i think i paid $358

Don't forget that Maxxis have a newer tyre to the buckshot called the Bighorn, it's has more tread on the sidewall and slightly different pattern.
There is a thread on 4wdmonthly and everyone seems to like them.
I got a couple of 32" Buckshots they other day, got them cheap at $175 a tyre. Have not done much with them yet but are pretty quiet and handle well enough.

I agree I'm sick of paying a fortune for tyres I don't believe the quality is any worse on the maxxis than some of the expensive brand with big advertising budgets. And believe me I have bought/used/changed/fixed alot of different tyres o and never listen to any of the crap advertising on 4wdmonthly they are getting there pockets pissed in by big companies but can you blame them they would be making a killing?

That's what it's all about these days isn't it advertising free tyres and getting pay'd to promote the product. I would be interested to hear how Maxxis wear over the rough stuff up there you'll have to keep us posted.

yep if someone paid for my tire's I would run what ever they put on to a certain point.

"I agree I'm sick of paying a fortune for tyres I don't believe the quality is any worse "
I agree with your too. Put a set of Westlake CR357 (10 ply rating) before a long weekend up the Starke track few weeks back... got some rain, plenty of that usual red clay slip. These had plenty of grip for the dual cab and 800kg of boat trailer... but at $158 a pop Im not gonna be too upset if they get staked.
They dont look as sexy as MTRs or BFG muds but to be honest they had more grip and better clearance of tread than a set of BFG muds I destroyed on the cape 2 year ago(mud between "rim protector" and rim = slow leaks)???
Also Cairns 2nd Tyres have had one tyre returned in several hundred sales... with a sidewall puncture (which still held air with 4 emergency plugs in it) so they cant be too foul?
regards
Steve

Yes they need to do away with the so called rim protector on the BFG the idea might of looked good on paper but hasn't worked out to well in the real world.

We've used both BFG and Coopers and they are both good. The really interesting thing is that many local NQ boys whinge about both, but it really seems to depend on the vehicle your running them on.
We ran BFGS and Coopers on a Nissan Patrol Wagon and I must admit that the Cooper STs were very good. We got 80,000k from them with plenty of off road work, no side wall damage and they performed very well.
